Elly was born in Bangkinang, Riau, on the island of Sumatra, Dutch Eeast
Indies. In 1924, when she was about eleven years old, she moved with her
family back to Holland.
Elly finished the HBS-B high school and went on to become a teacher. She
got two “second degree teaching” certificates: civics and economics.

Her husband, Peter Pauwels, was in Holland in 1935 (leave after seven years
of service abroad). Elly and he must have met during this time, as they got
married and Elly joined her husband when he returned to the Dutch East Indies.
They have lived in a number of places:
- Taloe and Priaman, West Sumatra, residence Padangsche lowlands.
- Soerabaja, Java (October 1938).
- Toelongagoeng, Central-Java, residence Kediri.
- In the Japanese camps Galuhan and later Banjoe Biroe 10, during the war.
- In Tjimahi she was reunited with her husband Peter, who died not
long afterwards.
After the war Elly returned to Holland in the hospital ship “Oranje”.
