Gerrit became an architect and, as City Architect of Enschede, built a number of schools for the city, such as Mr Ph.H. ter Meulen—former secretary of the municipality of Lonneker and friend of the Niermans family—informed us in 1941. Furthermore, including the corner house Parkweg-Hengeloschestraat (for Mr. ter Kuile), according to a statement from Mrs. Hufferman. He lived in the house called Zevensprong [on the Molenstraat in Enschede], as mentioned with Gerrit Doorwaart, and which included a very large garden, in which he grew roses. Part of that garden was occupied (in 1940) by a school and the office of the tire factory. The street next to the house is called the “Niermansgang.” The nameplate states that the street was named “after the old Nierman family from Enschede.”
Gerrit Johan’s sister Neeltje Niermans was very short in stature but generally known and loved. In the last years of her life she lived “at Pley Achter ’t Hofje” in rooms and, like Gerrit Johan, died of the flu in 1890. (Announcement by Mr. ter Meulen.)
His wife Annette Grivel had a brother Daniël Grivel, who was Inspector of Education in the Dutch East Indies (officer of Oranje Nassau), and a sister Maria Dorothea Grivel, married to Henri Bakkes, civil servant at the Court of Audit.
