My mother died of thrombosis on April 3rd, 1935 at the age of 46. We were living in the house at the Zoom, number 15. Cees did his first Communion on that day. I had a cold so I was not allowed to go to church. The butcher brought a dish with meat products for the communion party and I still remember that mother came down the stairs. There was a wicker armchair in the room with footrests, my mother usually lay on it.

Suddenly I was sent to church. “Go get dad quickly and you stay in church.” After the Holy Mass we went with Mrs. and Mrs. Huismans (who also had a communicant) and we stayed there that day eating and stuff. We also went to the Lof at 3 o’clock with the Huismans family and then the pastor came to tell us that mother had gone to the angels. Then we went home again. There was a lot of crying, of course, and there was a lot of bustle in the house, but I didn’t understand much.

Gré also came home from Eindhoven. Ben and Hedda, who were at the White Fathers Seminary in Sterksel, were not allowed to go home for the funeral because it was not their weekend off. Years later we heard that mother was very pregnant when she died, perhaps the baby was already born. Gré once told me that.

My mother (Maria van den Beemt) told us that, because the baby was not baptized, it could not be buried in consecrated ground. Grandpa insisted that his wife be buried with the baby, and so Mien Kramer wasn’t buried in the official cemetery of the Catholic Church.

Mother had a maternity leg, a leg with an open wound. They used to say that the stork had bitten it. When a blood clot was released and hit her heart valve, mother died. Father was indeed in our church at the time, because he sang in the men’s choir. I myself sat with the boys’ choir.
